What Rockstar says about Grassrivers
Rockstar greets players with “Welcome to the Wetlands” and calls Grassrivers “the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown.” The text plays with the unknown: you never know what lurks beneath the surface of this primeval landscape. The alligators may be the best-known attraction, but among the mangroves there are deadlier predators and stranger discoveries.
Which predators and discoveries those are, Rockstar does not reveal. It sounds like an area with plenty to find after release. Whatever it turns out to be, we'll collect it on our Easter eggs page.
What the official images show
Four official images show Grassrivers, and none of them is a postcard:
- Hunters on the airboat: Three people, covered in mud, pose on an airboat with a dead alligator and a dead wildcat. One has an assault rifle leaning against his leg, another holds a shotgun.
- Right among the alligators: Seen from above, an airboat drifts among alligators; one of the two people on board aims a gun at the nearest animal.
- Chase through the swamp: A helicopter and two patrol cars chase a pickup through the swamp, right past alligators, with an airboat in the background.
- With a view of Vice City: A speedboat heads toward houses standing on stilts in the water. In the distance you can see the skyline of Vice City.
The trailers show the region too. In Trailer 1 from December 2023, an airboat races through Grassrivers, with flamingos among the alligators. The Extended Look of August 27, 2026 featured an airboat ride through the swamp, and hunting and fishing appeared as activities. Several sources report this consistently.
Since October 8, 2026, a radio station for the area is known as well. Back Country Radio plays country and, according to Rockstar, broadcasts into Grassrivers, to Port Gellhorn and beyond. The station's reporter Mud Dog Mike checks in from the driver's seat of his airboat in Grassrivers. All stations introduced so far are listed under radio stations.
Grassrivers and the Everglades: what stands for what
In our reading, Grassrivers is modeled on the Everglades, the vast wetland in South Florida. Rockstar has not explicitly equated the two, though according to reports on the Game Informer cover story, its team traveled to the Everglades for research. The individual matches below are our reading.
| In GTA 6 | Real-world model |
|---|---|
| Grassrivers | Everglades, South Florida |
| The name “Grassrivers” | “The Everglades: River of Grass” (1947), the famous book by Marjory Stoneman Douglas |
| Airboats | Airboat tours; three airboat operators are licensed in Everglades National Park |
| Alligators | According to the Smithsonian, the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles live side by side in the wild |
| Wilderness outside the city | Everglades National Park, about 2,350 square miles (6,100 km²), directly west of Miami |
With the name, Rockstar is most likely nodding to the book “The Everglades: River of Grass.” In it, journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas described the Everglades in 1947 as a river of grass rather than a useless swamp, and brought them into the public eye. That same year, on December 6, 1947, President Harry Truman dedicated Everglades National Park.
Where exactly Grassrivers lies in Leonida, Rockstar has not shown on any official game map yet. The image with the skyline in the background reveals, though, that the swamps are within sight of Vice City. That fits our reading: the real Everglades begin directly west of Miami.
What you can do in Grassrivers
Airboats are the region's way of getting around; the official images and the trailers show that. Everything else that drives, floats and flies is under vehicles. The Extended Look also showed hunting and fishing, though Rockstar does not say where. Rockstar explicitly ties hunting and fishing only to Mount Kalaga. The image with the dead alligator shows, though, that hunting happens in Grassrivers. And if you run from the police, you apparently end up in the swamp sometimes: the image with the helicopter shows a chase right through the alligators.
A detail on the side: Leonida's official nickname is the “Goodtime State,” and the mascot of its best-known TV show is an alligator, Macca the Gator. His merch collection is part of the Ultimate Edition.
