Buying decision for GTA VI
Which console for GTA 6?Check what you already have first.
Already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S? Then you do not need a new console for the announced platform version. An upgrade is not a requirement.
Rockstar names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms. PS4, Xbox One and PC are not part of that announcement as the sources stand today. Hold off on buying new hardware if your budget or the performance you expect is still an open question. Platforms at Rockstar ↗

What do you already own?
Start with your hardware and your store account. The table gets you to an answer even if you do not want to buy anything today.
| Your situation | Our take |
|---|---|
| You own a PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro | Keep it. You are already in the announced PS5 family. For GTA VI you do not need a disc drive, even for the box. Why the box is still digital. |
| You own an Xbox Series X or Series S | Keep it. Rockstar names both explicitly. There is no documented GTA VI performance reason to switch. The Series S is digital only; the Series X comes in models with and without a disc drive. Manufacturer sources. |
| Only a PS4, Xbox One or PC; tight budget | Wait, or add up the total cost. The announcement we checked names no version for these devices. Budget for console plus game plus shipping. The Series S is a digital option for comparison, not a blanket best-price tip. |
| You want higher-end hardware | Pin down the added value first. The PS5 Pro is an option if you are deliberately spending more. If you are only hoping for more GTA VI frames per second, wait for concrete game data. Putting performance in perspective. |
| You want GTA VI as a box | Do not buy a disc drive just for that. Rockstar describes a download code without a disc. A drive is worth considering only for other disc games. Box and code explained. |
| Your store account is in a different region than the store or retailer | Check shipping country and code region separately. A product page in one country is no proof that the code redeems in an account from another. When in doubt, buy in the official store of your account's country. Account region explained. |
Tight budget: add up the whole purchase
Not buying a new console is the first way to save. If you already own a supported console, all you have left to compare is the game edition and your account region. If you do not, set a ceiling for console, game and shipping. If it does not fit, waiting is a complete answer from this guide.
The Xbox Series S is an option if you want to buy digitally and do not need a disc collection. Its hardware specs do not prove any particular GTA VI frame rate. Compare the current total price with a PS5 Digital Edition and, if applicable, a clearly described used or refurbished unit. Check its condition, controller, cables and the return policy. We do not claim any retailer is the cheapest.
For disc games you already own, the drive is what matters: the PS5 with a disc drive is one option. With the Xbox Series X you have to explicitly pick a model with a drive; the Digital Edition has none. Xbox model comparison ↗
Check the display you already have first: its manual lists the ports and supported display modes. Sony documents the PS5 connection via HDMI. Do not buy a new TV just because of a generic 4K or 120 Hz logo on the console box. That logo does not imply a matching GTA VI display mode. Setting up a PS5 ↗
Buy extra storage only once you need it. The Rockstar sources we checked state no binding GTA VI install size. Compare the actual requirement with the free space on your console later. The advertised SSD capacity is not fully available for games. Our preload guide with a download calculator helps with planning; its sample sizes are not a confirmed game size.
PS5 Pro: spending more needs a documented benefit
Sony describes the PS5 Pro with, among other things, enhanced ray tracing, PSSR and a 2 TB SSD. How much the graphics features do depends on the individual game. The disc drive is sold separately. These features may matter for the rest of your game library. PS5 Pro at Sony ↗
For the GTA VI buying decision we do not infer a fixed frame rate, a resolution or an advantage in every game mode from that. Sony's GTA VI marketing line “plays best” is not a comparable performance test either. If a specific frame rate is your buying criterion, wait for solid data on exactly this game and model. A GTA VI box does not mean a disc
Rockstar Support describes the physical version as a box with a download code and no disc. No disc drive is required for it; the game download is still necessary. Platform and redemption region must match your account. Rockstar on the box and codes ↗
A console with a drive is therefore only the right extra spend if you also want it for other disc games. With a PS5 Digital Edition, do not assume you can add a drive later: Sony names specific model groups for that. Check your console's model number before buying one. Sony on disc drive compatibility ↗
A game code contains the game. Store credit, on the other hand, is only a means of payment and still requires buying the game.
Account region, shipping country and language: three separate checks
Hardware: what matters is where the retailer ships. A console listing in one country is not automatically an option if you live in another; check the retailer's shipping countries before you order.
Game and account: shipping address, language and store account region are three different things. Check the actual region of your account and the terms of the specific code. Rockstar groups PlayStation game codes by country groups and describes Xbox game codes as not region-locked. That is not a blanket clearance for every store credit, bundle or retailer offer. If a retailer's description is unclear, do not buy the code yet. The pre-order guide explains where to buy the game for your account. Switching accounts or regions is not necessary for anything in this guide.
If you need to buy a console
Only go further if you really need a console. The Series S is the digital option to compare against. A PS5 with a disc drive makes sense if you also care about other games on disc. For GTA VI alone, the box doesn't justify paying extra for a drive. The PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 Pro remain models to compare as described in this guide. We don't recommend any specific retailer.
Before any purchase, check the model, shipping address, final price, seller and return policy. None of our recommendations requires buying accessories or an additional subscription.
Console sorted?
Now compare the game edition, the format and the matching store account.
